President’s Bodyguard honoured

New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil presented a silver trumpet and trumpet banner to the President’s Bodyguard at a special function. over the weekend

The tradition, started by Lord Reading in 1923, is meant to honour the President’s Bodyguard for their services.

‘Motivating factor’

“This ceremony is a motivating factor for us. It is an honour for us,” Col. Ali Adil Mehmud, Commanding Officer of the President’s Bodyguard said.

The President’s Bodygard has the unique distinction of being the only military unit in the Indian Army privileged to carry the President’s silver trumpet and trumpet banner.

The President’s Bodyguard was raised in 1773 at Benaras by the Governor General of India Warren Hastings.

Intergral part

The President’s Bodyguard are personal troops of the President and hence form an integral part of all state functions.

They perform operational duties. The regiment has seen action in various roles and battlefields ever since it was raised. Col. Mehmud said a host of events, including musical shows and audio visual presentation, were conducted on the occasion.

A new regimental song that had been composed and recorded was also presented on the occasion.
