Repeated pleas to authorities have fallen on deaf ears The Government College for Women in Kolar is in need of an auditorium. The absence of one has become a handicap for students in conducting functions, meetings and cultural programmes. The women’s college is a boon for students in the city and surrounding villages. About 1,800 students pursue various courses here, including BBM. The students mainly belong to Dalit, backward classes and minority communities. Though there is eno ugh space on the college premises, no effort appears to have been made to build an auditorium. Functions are now organised either in a classroom or by erecting a pandal in the open ground. “The classroom where functions are held is small and hardly 150 people can be accommodated there,” said Shubha V., a final year BA student. Moreover, the celebrations during programmes disturb students in other classrooms, she says. Because the room is small even guests feel uncomfortable sitting there, according to Shubha. Erecting pandals every time a function is planned is a difficult task, the students feel. It is because of this that there is a growing demand for an auditorium. The teachers have also come out in support of the demand. “This fact has been brought to the notice of the authorities concerned,” college development committee member Munivenkatappa told The Hindu. “Scores of memorandums have been submitted, but no action has so far been taken in this regard,” he added.
