BANGALORE: The Federation of various Madiga (Scheduled Castes) associations in the State on Sunday threatened to launch an agitation if there was any further delay in providing internal reservation among the Scheduled Castes based on population. A resolution in this regard was adopted at a State-level convention of the Madiga community here in which six Madiga organisations came together to decided to put up a united struggle for the cause of the oppressed community. The resolution alleged that the present system of reservation provided to the community was disproportionate to their population. In all, there were 101 communities under the Scheduled Castes’ list. Some of these communities had cornered a majority of the reservation benefits though their population was less than that of other communities, the resolution alleged. A survey in Andhra Pradesh had confirmed the injustice done to the community in that State in the matter of reservation. The situation in Karnataka would not be different as the condition of the members of the community was similar in both the States, the resolution stated. Pointing out that the State Government had set up a commission headed by retired Karnataka High Court judge A. J. Sadashiva to look into the issue of internal reservation among the Scheduled Castes, the convention expressed dissatisfaction over the delay by the commission to submit its recommendations to the Government. The resolution alleged that the Government was not even conducting a proper caste-wise census. It alleged that all the party governments, which ruled the State so far, had been cheating Madigas by not providing population-based reservation. The former bureaucrat Bulla Subba Rao, who is also president of the reception committee of the Madiga convention, urged the Government to provide basic civic amenities in localities where members of the community lived. Bahujan Samaj Party State president Marasandra Muniyappa was felicitated at the convention. Mr. Muniyappa stressed the need for maintaining unity among all the Dalits. Hailing the social engineering experiment taken up by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, he expressed confidence that she would become prime minister.
