Chief Minister’s poser to TDP

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has questioned the silence on the part of the Opposition over the Government’s decision to constitute a commission to study regional backwardness in the State.

“When the Telugu Desam Party was in power, it failed to take a look at the backwardness of regions and it is adopting the same stand even when in the Opposition,” Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy noted.

In a press note issued from the Chief Minister’s office here on Sunday, he stated the Government had given an open invitation to the Opposition parties to participate in a debate on constitution of the commission.

Before the issue is debated in the legislature, the Government intends to hold interaction with the intellectuals, social scientists and economists to elicit their views.

Government is in the process of preparing a concept paper on the constitution of the commission, the Chief Minister said and added that a meeting is slated for March 6 to discuss the proposals.

The Chief Minister at a meeting with officials discussed the modalities for the constitution of the commission. He asked the officials to study what all issues could be covered by the commission. He wanted them to examine the causes for backwardness of the regions and the living conditions of the people in these regions.

And if necessary, study the practices in other States so that the same could be replicated here too.

Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy also advised the officials to examine whether the proposed commission could be headed by a Supreme Court or High Court judge.

He said that the Government was committed to fulfil all the promises it had made to the people and developing the backward regions was a priority with the Congress Government.
