‘Extend waiver of loans to poultry farmers’

Special Correspondent

SALEM: Poultry farmers have urged the Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to extend the benefits of loans and interest waivers to small and marginal poultry farmers who have been facing severe crises following the outbreak of bird flu in West Bengal and the escalating cost of feeds.

Maintaining a consistently higher growth rate of 15 to 18 per cent in the country’s agriculture sector, the poultry industry has urged the Finance Minister to understand the gravity of the crisis being faced by poultry farmers.

“We are not asking for this benefit to large farmers, corporate bodies and poultry processing companies. We request that at least small and marginal poultry farmers having up to 50,000 birds should be given the benefit of their loans being waived,” , said Anuradha J. Desai, Chairperson of the National Egg Co-ordination Committee
