Coimbatore: Adolescent girls should develop confidence to be self-dependent and should strive to be educated, Minister for Social Welfare Poongothai Aladi Aruna said here on Sunday.

Distributing over Rs. 1 crore assistance to 1,258 beneficiaries under various welfare schemes at a “Valar Illam Pengal Thiruvizha” organised by the Department of Social Welfare, she said the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme had several components such as the Kishori Shakti Yojana (for adolescent girls), health education, welfare programmes for pregnant women and senior citizens.

Re-designed pamphlets on disease prevention were distributed to pregnant women to create awareness. This year, the focus was on girls aged between 11 and 18.

About 57 per cent of women in India suffered from anaemia and a large number of them got married before they were 18 years. When young girls suffered from anaemia, their education and daily activities were also affected. So, adolescent girls needed health education.

She urged them to get good education, to develop self-confidence and to get married only after turning 21.

During the last two years, marriage assistance was provided to nearly 50,000 women in the State and 30 districts had primary schools for the hearing impaired and the mentally disabled children.

She said young girls should be messengers to society.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam said a rally was organised on Sunday as part of the programme to create awareness among women.

The Centre and State Governments had various programmes and provided assistance to young women and self-help groups.
