Now, paying fees through ATMs
S. Ramesh
Varsity positively considering a proposal made by State Bank of India
SALEM: Students of Periyar University and those studying in the affiliated colleges and Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE) will soon be able to pay their fees at the push of a button in the ATMs (Automated Teller Machine) of State Bank of India.
The varsity is positively considering a proposal made by the SBI in this regard. The new system, if implemented, will enable the students to pay their fees in SBI ATMs located anywhere in the country. All a student needs is a bank account with the SBI and an ATM card. Students can also pay the fees with the ATM cards of their parents. The new system will particularly benefit the PRIDE students, who are now remitting the fees by sending demand drafts. A large number of students from other States are pursuing UG and PG programmes in the PRIDE.
Students in the regular mode are paying the examination fees through their respective colleges, University Vice-Chancellor M. Thangaraju points out. The processing of demand drafts and physical handling of currencies result in unnecessary delays now, says varsity officials.
The new system will eliminate the paper work, speed up the processing and ensure instant credit. The university will also be able to closely monitor the fee remittance, SBI officials say. The University has decided to go ahead with the proposal as it will benefit a large number of students, Mr. Thangaraju says.
The university authorities and the bank officials conducted a discussion about the new system at a meeting held recently. The plan is still in the initial stage. The bank has planned to extend the system of fee payment through ATM to schools and colleges in the district too.
