KADAPA: CITU State vice-president S. Punyavathi called upon women on Sunday to change their mindset and gear for an agitation to resolve public issues. Addressing the ninth ‘Sramik Mahila’ sadassu organised by Insurance Corporation Employees Union, she said it was laudable that Pratibha Patil was at the helm of affairs as the first woman President of the country and recalled Indian-born astronaut Sunitha Williams sojourn into space. Women should join agitations against increase in foreign direct investment in the insurance sector, proposed merger of banks and problems of unorganised workers, she said. Domestic violence cases were widespread in middle class families rather than among poor labourers, she said. Women should realise that they could achieve any goal by their determination and shed the notion that they were helpless. She spoke on the importance of International Women’s Day slated on March 8. International Women’s Day would be purposeful only when women gained economic independence, All-India Insurance Employees Association working committee member Girija said in her inaugural address. Women should gain awareness and strive for their progress, she said. Night duties and lack of stipulated working hours in lucrative IT jobs were resulting in early ageing process among women by the time they attained 40 years of age, she said. She called for recruitment in the LIC as work load increased tremendously. Healthy practicesLIC senior divisional manager A.V.N. Kumar called for healthy trade union practices in every organisation. LIC marketing manager P. Srinivas said women were being subjected to grave atrocities, apart from eve teasing and wanted the culprits dealt with sternly. CITU district vice-president I.N. Subbamma expressed concern at growing cases of domestic violence in Kadapa and withdrawal of some cases by victims under pressure.
