THANJAVUR: Indian Overseas Bank, lead bank of the district, will soon host Sakthi Bazaars to enable women self help groups to market their products, its Chief Regional Manager T. Veerappan said here recently.

He inaugurated the Sakthi-IOB Chidambaram Chettiar Memorial entrepreneurship training programme for women at the bank’s Rural Training Centre.

The participants would be trained in making ornamental jewellery, bags and bakery products, vermi composting and pig rearing. There was also a beautician course, he said.

Till December 2007, IOB in the district did business of Rs.1,33,413 crore. Deposits were to the tune of Rs.78,791 crore.

Total credit given was Rs.54,622 crore and profit made during the nine months period was Rs.896 crore.

Director of Rural Training Centre Jaganathan said the centre had trained 3,910 persons, including 2,186 women, in the last two years.

Seventy-four training programmes, ranging from cell phone repair to crafting greeting cards, were conducted.

Feedback was sought from the trainees after three to six months of training. Women were taught how to prepare project reports and market their products.

They were also made aware of financial assistance provided by the State and Central governments.

Field visits and use of audio visuals formed part of the training. Many who were trained at the centre became entrepreneurs and started their own units.
