Call for more autonomy

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Architecture education should ideally be separate from engineering education, according to Vijay Sohoni, president of the Council of Architecture.

At an exhibition organised on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the School of Architecture and Planning (SAP), one of the constituent institutions of Anna University, Prof. Sohoni said that “if SAP wants to acquire the status of a full-fledged university…the Council would support such a move wholeheartedly”.

He warned that there were efforts on to downgrade the School to a university department, and made it clear that the Council would not allow such a move.

“There are conflicts because what is prescribed for architecture is different from what is prescribed for engineering,” said Prof. Sohoni, speaking on the sidelines of the Zak Architech Construction Speciality Expo, which concluded at Chennai Trade Centre on Sunday. For example, he said, the prescribed staff to student ratio for engineering courses is 1:20.

For architecture, it is 1:8. “In such a scenario, you will have a college head asking [the architecture department], ‘Why do you need so many teachers’,” he said.

Others involved with architecture education in the city agreed that their field needs more autonomy than is currently granted.

“We need to have the freedom to make our own decisions…The teaching methods, coursework, types of assessment are all different from engineering,” said one architect. Students also require more interaction with professionals, but there are often restrictions on visiting faculty, said another, adding that “if we could function under the direct control of the Council, it would be the ideal situation”.

A separate university would also help to diversify into other related areas of design.
