TIRUCHI: Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Post Graduate Teachers’ Association has urged the State Government to constitute a directorate for higher secondary education.

Presiding over the association’s State conference convened to thank the government for having fulfilled several long-pending demands of the teaching community here on Friday, association State president V. Manivasagan said that the post graduate teachers, despite playing a key role during the crucial period of the students’ educational career, were deprived of promotional opportunities.

"Elevation of juniors"

On the other hand, school assistants, who were junior to them, were being elevated to the cadres of District or Chief Educational officers by virtue of the service conditions under the Directorate of School Education.

Teachers for Botany

He also wanted appointment of teachers to handle Botany and Zoology for Plus Two classes in the wake of the new syllabi.

He urged the Government to sanction four more teaching posts for the higher secondary schools which were upgraded from high school status during or after 1989. As per government norms, only five teachers had been sanctioned for these schools.

Mr. Manivasagan pleaded for creation of additional post of teachers for handling Tamil and English in higher secondary schools in the wake of increased overload for the existing teachers; and regularisation of services recruited on consolidated pay basis during 2003-04.

State Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu, who released a book containing the Government Orders and guidelines of various Education Department schemes, said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was fully aware of the teachers’ demands. The first copy was received by Forests Minister N. Selvaraj.

Transport Minister K. N. Nehru underlined the responsibility of post graduate teachers in guiding the students.
