GETTING TO KNOW: Highways Minister Vellakoil Saminathan (left) being briefed by officials at the construction site of the ROB to replace a level-crossing in Alandur on Friday.

TAMBARAM: The 5-km-long St. Thomas Mount-Velachery stretch of the Southern Sector of Inner Ring Road will be completed by the middle of 2009, Highways Minister Vellakoil Saminathan said on Friday.

Talking to reporters at Pazhavanthangal, after inspecting a few ongoing road and bridge projects in the southern suburbs of Chennai, the Minister said an important component of the Southern Sector was the bridge across Adambakkam Lake. Work was expected to start soon.

For the St. Thomas Mount-Velachery project, necessary land, except a 700-metre stretch, had been acquired. The necessary formalities, however, were expected to be completed at the earliest, Mr. Saminathan said.

The Minister said that the entire project would be completed by the first half of 2009.

The four-lane highway would have Mass Rapid Transit System network running through it in the middle, he added.

On the fate of the road overbridge in Tambaram to replace a railway level-crossing (LC No.30), the Minister said that issues relating to land acquisition from Southern Railway were sorted out. (Southern Railway had initially asked for a huge sum for parting with land to the State Highways Department for the bridge construction).

Along with officials of his department, he had met Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu twice, once during a joint meeting in Chennai in January and later in New Delhi. Southern Railway had agreed to accept alternative land as the property was not being used for a commercial purpose, Mr. Saminathan said.

Work on the Rs.13.2-crore bridge in Pallikaranai at the intersection of Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road was proceeding briskly and would be completed by September, the Minister said.

He also said that problems relating to design for the road overbridge at Pallavaram to link this Radial Road with the Grand Southern Trunk Road were sorted out.

Work would be taken up in the first week of April to finish the incomplete works at an estimated cost of Rs.18 crore, Mr. Saminathan said.

The Minister said the Detailed Project Report for the Rs.50-crore grade separator at the Porur junction to be executed under the Chennai Metropolitan Development Programme was being finalised and the work would commence shortly.
