Madurai: City Police (Chennai) lifted the BJPM Trophy defeating G.K. Motors Hockey Club (Madurai) by the odd goal in three in the final of the Hi-Tech Arai-IOC ninth annual State-level hockey tournament here on Sunday. Dominic gave the lead for Police in the 17th minute off a Manikandan’s pass and Manikandan enhanced the lead off a Dominic pass in the 44th minute. G.K. Motors reduced the margin in the next five minutes when A.G. Kannan sounded the boards off a Vaman pass. Earlier in the semifinals, City Police beat the defending champion Tamil Nadu Special Police (Chennai) 5-3 in a tie-breaker after the teams were locked goalless at the end of the regulation time, while G.K. Motors HC beat Thirunagar HC 5-4 in sudden death after the teams were level 0-0 at full time and 4-4 in the tie-breaker. Loyola triumphsAt Karaikudi, Loyola College (Chennai) lifted the Selva Trophy defeating Alagappa University College of Physical Education 2-0 in the final of the 17th annual State-level inter-collegiate football tournament on Sunday. James Selvakumar scored the first goal in the 16th minute and Suriya Kumar scored the second in the 45th minute. Earlier in the semifinals, Loyola beat Madras Christian College 2-0 with Suriya Kumar and Lalchnal scoring. AUCPE beat Shanmuganathan College of Engineering (Pudukottai) 4-1 in a tie-breaker after the teams were locked goalless at full time. In the tie-breaker, Chinnasamy, Nagoor Kani, Arulanandan and Gunasekaran scored for AUCPE. Muthukumar scored for Pudukottai team. Coimbatore posts winAt Madurai, Coimbatore beat host Madurai by an innings and 241 runs on the last day in the three-day final of the TNCA inter-district under-13 cricket tournament on Sunday. Resuming its first innings at 309 for seven, Coimbatore made 420 with Kausik scoring a century. The scores: Madurai 114 in 64.3 overs and 65 in 40.5 overs (Vignesh Karthick four for 27) lost to Coimbatore 420 in 171.4 overs (Dhanus 30, Kausik 100, Vignesh Karthick 51, David four for 76). Girish winsGirish of CBA (Coimbatore) won the title defeating Pranith of TNBA (Chennai) 5-0 in the final of the Madurai Union Club’s invitation snooker tournament on Sunday.
