Police constable dies in hit-and-run case

Staff Reporter

P.C. Nagesh

BANGALORE: A police constable on night patrol was killed when he was run over by a car driven by a man he was chasing near the J.P. Nagar police station on Saturday.

Constable P.C. Nagesh (31) was on patrol along with a colleague on their motorcycle when a local resident called the police station about sighting a man removing the hubcaps of some cars parked near Ambarish Park. The police alerted Nagesh who was riding pillion on the motorcycle. A message was also sent across to the patrolling (Hoysala) party.

As the police closed in, the suspect rushed to a white car and got in. Even as he was driving off, Nagesh and his colleague approached from the opposite direction. The car brushed the motorcycle and Nagesh fell off the vehicle and was run over by the car. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe head injuries where he was declared dead.

Expressing his anguish over the death, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) S. Ravi said the police team has been constituted to arrest the man whom the police suspect to be involved in many thefts. “The accused sped away and hit the motorcycle. While the rider escaped unhurt, Nagesh unfortunately died.” “With the sudden turn of events and because it was night time, the registration number of the car could not be noted,” he said.

The Jayanagar traffic police have registered a case of a hit-and-run.

Grieving family

A pal of gloom fell on Kittamongollahalli, Nagesh’s village in Kanakapura taluk, where the body was brought for the last rites. Nagesh is the younger of the two children of Chowdaiah, an agriculturist.

A group of policemen from the city, including J.P. Nagar police inspector Bhaskar Vakkaliga, went to the village with Nagesh’s body and the burial was done with State honours.

Nagesh joined the police service seven years ago. He was married to Shobha eight months ago.
