BANGALORE: Several stumps of trees that were felled to make way for the Metro Rail project, have not been cleared from Ulsoor Road. They continue to lie on the footpath causing inconvenience to pedestrians. The stumps of the trees that were felled on the 515 Army Workshop campus have been lying on the pavement adjoining the workshop since the last four days. When contacted, the officials of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) told The Hindu that measures would be taken to clear the footpath of the tree stumps within two days. The BMRCL officials said Surendra Constructions had been entrusted with the work of expanding roads in Reach 1 of the Metro Rail project — between Chinnaswamy Stadium and Byappanahalli. They said that the trees had been felled to expand the stretch of Ulsoor Road. An agency appointed by the Indian Army was given the contract to fell the trees, after getting permission from Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. A few days ago, the agency felled nine trees in the night, with the city police diverting traffic on the stretch. However, the agency was not able to clear the stumps. The police had given them two nights to complete the work.
