Settle territorial dispute: Nanje Gowda

Staff Reporter

Former Minister’s advice to State Government

BANGALORE: The drinking water project proposed by the Tamil Nadu Government at Hogenakkal should not be taken up till territorial dispute is resolved, the former Minister, H.N. Nanje Gowda, said and voiced his suspicion that the project would also involve generation of hydel power and irrigation.

He also said that the State Government should clarify that it is not against the project if it was for drinking water purpose only. The former Minister was speaking here on “Illegal Hogenakkal project and new developments in Cauvery disputes”, organised by the Karnataka Kaigarika Mathu Vanijyodyama Kannada Sanghagala Okkoota on the Kannada Sahitya Parishat premises. “Hogenakkal project has been announced unilaterally without taking consent of the other States concerned,” he added.

Mr. Nanje Gowda said: “The Tamil Nadu Government has not given the project report to Karnataka nor has it informed about the area of submergence in Karnataka territory, if any. Further, we do not know if the project has received environmental clearance and also clearance from the Union Government.”

The Tamil Nadu Government should have sent the project report to both Karnataka and Kerala besides the Union Government before taking it [project] up, he added. Pointing out that Karnataka Government has not taken any action in this regard, he said: “The State Government should approach the tribunal to seek information about the project, and inform the tribunal that it was not against supply of drinking water to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.”
