Utilise varsity’s expertise

It is heartening to note that the Centre for Environmental Studies of Anna University discussed the problem of solid waste management during a recent seminar. The Municipal Administration Department should seek the help of the university’s Directorate of Environmental Studies for effective guidance to make the dumping yards at Perungudi/Pallikaranai and Kodungaiyur make eco-friendly besides converting the waste into wealth and energy. This will go a long way in arresting pollution.

Billboard menace

Recently, Chief Minister Karunanidhi warned those who did not remove billboards and hoardings within the specified period of legal action. I appreciate this move, but what about removal of billboards and hoardings protruding beyond the footpath that have the sanction of the Corporation authorities?

On College Road and Sterling Road, four billboards are protruding beyond the footpath. Even a small boy walking on the footpath risks his head. With Harrington Road becoming one-way, vehicles coming from that side and those from Ega theatre and Spur Tank tend to speed. As a result, we can neither walk on the footpath nor on the road.

I request the Corporation authorities either to remove the billboards or position them within the compound of the buildings.

Good service, bad amenities

After MRTS services were extended up to Velachery, many bus passengers have switched to it. Though the services are maintaining their arrival and departure schedule, the electronic boards at some stations are not being updated in time.

The remaining works at some stations are yet to be completed. Barring one or two important stations, others lack adequate seats and toilet facilities. Lifts are not functioning in some stations. Staircases, platforms and track are littered with waste, adding to the mosquito menace. Ticketless travel is on the rise in the absence of ticket examiners in many stations.

Road in ruin

At Alandur, near Grand Southern Trunk Road and between Sankara Nethralaya and the recently constructed pedestrian subway, a 300-foot stretch of road is in bad shape. It is a bone-rattling affair for drivers and passengers of vehicles coming from Railway Station Road on their way to GST Road. It is beyond comprehension as to why this stretch has remained neglected for quite some time now. Will the authorities concerned act immediately to blacktop the road?

Streamline supply

The government, it seems has asked LPG dealers to book refill orders from consumers after maintaining a 21-day gap from the last date of supply. Consumers who had double cylinders were hitherto getting a cylinder every 15 days, and receiving the supplies within three days of booking. There was no waiting period. Now, in addition to the 21-day gap, cylinders are delivered only 10 days after the booking is done. In short, a consumer will get two cylinders during a two-month period.

LPG is an essential item and authorities concerned should be equipped and ready to cater to the needs of the public without any hassles. I booked for a cylinder on February 26 and the dealer has said it will be delivered only after ten days.

Pensioners’ plea

Recently, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board announced some pension benefits for those who retired on or before May 31, 1988. The present age of surviving eligible pensioners is 78 at the minimum, extending up to 95. The total number could be around 3000.

The last paragraph of the order dated February1, 2008 reads: “These orders shall take effect from 1st February 2008, pending decision on payment of arrears.” It is our earnest hope that the arrears would be paid in lump sum, as was done in the case of the pensioners of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Extend concession to male senior citizens

We senior citizens congratulate the Railway Minister for enhancing the travel concession for women senior citizens. It would have been nice if the Minister had extended the concession without gender discrimination.

During the budget speech, the Minister said that this year, the Railways would have a surplus income of Rs.25,000 crore after meeting all expenses, which makes it clear that there is no financial constraint for extending the concession to male senior citizens.

We have been demanding, for years, enhancement of travel concession for senior citizens. Air India gives 50% travel concession to senior citizens without discrimination. We request the Minister to consider our request.

Power cut

Residents of Pallavaram, Pammal, Polichalur and Anakaputhoor have been suffering, for nearly a fortnight, unannounced power cuts, which cause unbearable inconvenience to people and also affects business establishments. In the evenings, the supply is suspended at least for an hour. Not a day passes without power cut. I request the authorities to remedy the situation and provide uninterrupted supply.
