Retirement age

Sir, — It is unfortunate that the State Government Employees’ Association has demanded that the age of superannuation be raised from 58 to 60. With the advent of privatisation and globalisation, the number of government jobs is decreasing. Increasing the retirement age will aggravate the problem of unemployment and hinder efficiency of administration. The Government should reject the demand for raising the retirement age.

Streetlights

Sir, — The bulbs on the streetlights in J.P. Nagar 6th and 7th phases have been missing for several months. Several of the streetlights are not of much use as they are covered by the branches of coconut trees. Bangalore Electricity Supply Company and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike should take steps to ensure proper lighting in the area.

Allow right turn

Sir, — Residents of Kempapura in Bangalore are being put to hardship as the traffic police have prohibited right turn at Military Farm Gate (popularly known as Dairy Gate) from February 25. As a result, vehicles coming down the Hebbal flyover on Bellary Road have to take a U-turn at Kodigenahalli to reach Kempapura. This adds another three km to their journey. Vehicles going towards Yelahanka have to go under the flyover to take a U-turn to proceed towards Yelahanka. Owing to the detour, students, office-goers and others are not able to reach their destination on time.

Identity cards

Sir, — The identity card issued by the Railways along with the season tickets costs only Re. 1 and is valid for seven years, whereas the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) charges Rs. 100 for the identity card which is valid for three years. Being a public service organisation, the BMTC could charge Rs. 10 for the identity card which will help poor people dependent on buses. The monthly passes issued by the BMTC should be valid for 30 or 31 days as the case may be from the date of issue instead of the calendar month.
