Train-spotting in the digital age

COMMUTER-FRIENDLY: A real time board installed at the main entrance of the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station to provide information on the running of trains.

Are you one among those who have cursed the railway officials at the enquiry counter trying to find out about the arrival or departure of a train on which friends or relatives were travelling? The Thiruvananthapuram divisional railway authorities have an answer for you — a ‘Spot your train’ display board tracking train movement in real time.

Commuters and the public no longer need to queue up at the enquiry counter or look at the notice boards for train arrivals and departures. The display board, installed on the right side of the main entrance to platform one at Thiruvananthapuram Central station, will track movement of mail, express and passenger trains, along with name and number of the train, destination, and railway map of the stretch.

The board has been installed at a cost of Rs.2.5 lakh and is linked to the railway control to provide the real-time running of the trains to the public. At present, the display board provides information only on the trains passing through the Nagercoil-Kollam stretch. The railways are yet to commission the ‘Spot your train’ display board. “This is another step towards making the railways commuter-friendly. We have plans to introduce the same facility at other railway stations in the division,” says Divisional Manager Titus P. Koshy.

The facility is helpful to the commuters and those who come to receive friends and relatives arriving on various trains. Already, lot of commuters can be seen before the display board.
