Feast for bibliophiles

IMPRESSIVE Collection: The book fair organised by Modern Book House in Thiruvananthapuram will conclude on March 9.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city might have lost a landmark with the closure of the British Library, but the cities passion for books continues unabated or so it seems.

With nearly 15,000 titles from over 100 different publishers, national and international, the ongoing book fairs organised by V-publishers, Modern and DC books in the capital city are virtually a literary feast for book lovers.

From books priced at a modest Rs.10 published in Malayalam focusing on topics of ‘general interest’ such as yoga, school projects and biographies to the 20-volume Encyclopaedia of Science and Technology priced at a whopping Rs.1.24 lakh; the fair offers an impressive array of books for students, academics, professionals, etc..

‘Benazir Bhutto — Reconciliation, Islam, Democracy and the West,’ released after the death of the former Pakistan Prime Minister; ‘What we say goes, conversations on U.S. power in changing world’ by linguist Noam Chomsky and ‘A biography of the Bible,’ by noted historian and former Roman Catholic nun Karen Armstrong are some of the new arrivals at the fair conducted by the Modern Book house at the Bank Employees Union hall. The event will conclude on March 8.

The fair also has some rare collection of books related to science and technology and social sciences meant for reference and research. These books are usually unavailable in shops, said N.E. Chithrasenan, in-charge of the fair.

According to Vijaya Mohan, manager, V. Publishers, which is organising a fair for the first time in the city at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium, the emphasis has been on professional books. “We have nearly 7,000 titles relating to medicine alone,” he said. The fair spread across an area of 20,000 sq.ft also includes titles from international publishing houses namely Pearson and McGraw-Hill apart from a separate stall for books from the Cambridge University Press. The exhibition will conclude on March 9.
