BHAVANI: A handloom cluster was inaugurated at Appakoodal, near here, on Monday. The project comes under the Union Government’s Integrated Handloom Cluster Development scheme.

According to the scheme, the Appakoodal cluster will get about Rs. 60 lakh from the Government, with which weavers’ training centre, design centre, weaving sheds, common facility centre, etc. will be created.

The scheme is targeted at 500 weavers, who will be trained to weave new designs and provided add-ons like jacquard for the purpose. The training will be for 45 days.

Inaugurating the cluster, State Minister for Handlooms and Textiles NKKP. Raja said the purpose of the programme was to make handloom weaving a lucrative avocation, so that weavers continued weaving and the society did not lose some of its rich traditions in textiles.

He assured the weavers that the new designs to be introduced would fetch better price, as marketing linkages would be arranged and export possibilities explored.

State Secretary to the Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts and Textiles, Viswanath Shegaonkar said of the clusters the Government had opened so far, Co-optex had been put in charge of 10.

In Erode district the clusters have been opened in Appakoodal, Thandampalayam, D. G. Pudur and Chennimalai. The scheme will be implemented over a period of three years.

Special Officer-cum- Managing Director of Co-optex M. P. Nirmala, Additional Director, Handlooms Department, K. Karnan and other department staff participated.
