Training for senior officers

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: A training programme for senior level officers of the Puducherry government to sensitise them in the new system of accounting was held here on Monday.

According to official sources, the cash balance of the UT government had been separated from the consolidated fund of the Central government, after amending the Government of the Union Territories Act, 1963.

Now the Puducherry government had its own Public Account and the Reserve Bank of India had started monitoring the UT government’s Receipt and Expenditure transactions on a day-to-day basis with effect from December 17, 2007.

The training programme was needed to enable them to operate the finances of the UT on its own in real terms and encourage them to observe strict financial discipline, it pointed out.

Only against this backdrop, the RBI deputed two senior officers — Director of the Department of Economic Analysis and Policies of RBI (Chennai) B.N.Ananthaswamy and Assistant General Manager of the Central Accounts Section of RBI (Nagpur) C.N.Balwir — to Puducherry for conducting the programme.

They imparted training to all the Secretaries to Government, Heads of Departments and senior level officers. Among others, Chief Secretary to Puducherry government Rakesh Behari and Development Commissioner Naini Jayaseelan spoke on the occasion highlighting the importance of the training programme.
