Mount pressure for High Court Bench: Sudheeran

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran has called for the constitution of an all-party delegation comprising the Union Ministers, Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition to press for the constitution of a High Court Bench in the capital.

He was speaking to the members of the Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association who are undergoing an indefinite Satyagraha in front of the Vanchiyoor Court Complex here on Monday.

“The delegation should meet the President and Prime Minister and apprise them about the situation,” he said.

Mr. Sudheeran said that there were attempts by certain sections to convert the issue into a flashpoint between the executive and the judiciary.

“A confrontation between the executive and the judiciary on the issued should be avoided,” he said.

Mr. Sudheeran also urged the State government to review the steps it has initiated for the constitution of a High Court Bench here.

Later in the evening senior congress leader and former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran visited the protesting lawyers and expressed his solidarity for the cause. “A High Court Bench in the capital city is a long-time demand of the people here. The Chief Justice should explain why he decided against setting up a High Court Bench here,” said Mr. Karunakaran. Bharatiya Janata Party leaders O. Rajagopal, C.K. Padmanabhan and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Kadakampally Surendran also addressed the gathering.

Meanwhile, the support for the agitating lawyers from political parties and the public is increasing.

The DYFI district committee has decided to organise ‘a full citizen reference’ on Tuesday morning in front of the court complex demanding the constitution of the High Court Bench.

In a release issued by the Capital City Development Forum, the members demanded the restoration of the High Court Bench in the capital, which was shifted to Eranakulam, following the reorganisation of the States.
