Court directive to inspector

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Ariankuppam Circle police inspector to consider the fresh claim of the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) and pass appropriate orders, permitting the organisation to convene a public meeting in support of the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils. However, the police have the right to impose reasonable restrictions on the petitioner, especially regarding speaking about any banned organisation, it said.

In his order, Justice P. Jyothimani said in the event of the petitioner making any application, the police should consider the same and pass appropriate orders in the light of the observations made within 10 days. The Judge said the petitioner had a right to convene the meeting.

In his petition, Logu Iyyappan, PDK president, submitted that he proposed to conduct a public meeting in Puducherry in support of the island Tamils and to request the Union Government not to support the island nation by giving any aid. He gave an application to the Circle Inspector seeking permission for holding the meeting on November 28, 2007.
