Crafts exhibition evokes good response

GUNTUR: If the intricate hand-woven designs on the wood inlay works evoke awe, the assortment of hand-made cotton fabrics is alluring the visitors at the ongoing crafts exhibition on the premises of Sri Venkateswara Vignana Mandiram.

Myriad varieties of traditional handlooms are on display at the exhibition which commenced on Friday.

Village Development Society project officer Shiva said that the exhibition had brought many artisans and crafts men from various parts in the country.

The wood inlay works by the Sharanpur craftsmen is a testimony to the skill of the artisans and so are the soft leather products from Uttar Pradesh and the leather artisans from Warangal. Traditional cotton kurtas and pyjamas in bright hues seem to be a perfect answer to the summer heat. Lace works from Narsapur and the dress materials in Batlik print too are on display.

A vast collection of bed sheets, pillow covers, curtains, towels, wall hangings and other furnishings in different colours are a big draw at the exhibition.

For art connoisseurs, a few paintings, laminated and framed, make a good bet. A wide array of earrings, bangles, beads and necklaces offer a choice for the girls.

"We have nearly 40 artisans from various parts of the country displaying the diversity of culture and their skill at the exhibition,” says Mr. Shiva. The exhibition will be on till March 9.
