Resuming work on Sethu project will be war on Hindus: VHP leader

‘We will do whatever possible within the democratic framework to protect Ramar Sethu’

COIMBATORE: Efforts by the Central Government to resume work on the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project will be a war on Hindus if it is to be implemented by demolishing the Ramar Sethu, Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Ashok Singhal told presspersons here on Monday.

Mr. Singhal warned of an uprising by 100 crore Hindus if works to demolish the bridge restarted. Contending that the bridge was not a natural formation but built during the times of Lord Ram, Mr. Singhal said: “We will do whatever possible within the democratic framework to protect the Ramar Sethu”.

The issue would also have an impact on the next Lok Sabha elections, he added.

Rallies

The Ram Sethu Raksha Manch has called for motorcycle and scooter rallies across the country on March 4 and 5 to protest against the Central Government’s decision to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court to have the stay on the project vacated, Manch general secretary S. Vedantam said.

“We are taking this as a challenge.” “We are not totally against the project. But, we do not want it implemented at the cost of the Ramar Sethu. Why cannot the Centre think of an alternative route, especially when the Supreme Court itself has pointed out that the Government had mentioned six alignments for the project?” he questioned.
