Corrections and clarifications

In a hockey report “India starts with a huge win” (“Sport”, March 3, 2008), the dateline and first paragraph read “New Delhi: Eight-time gold medallist India got its campaign to qualify for this year’s Olympic Games off to a flying start with an 8-0 win over Russia here on Saturday.” The dateline should have been Santiago, Chile.

A promo (March 1, 2008, page 1) was “Shiv Kapur in joint league”, while the detailed (golf) report in the inside pages (“Sport”, March 1, 2008) gave the headline as “Shiv Kapur jumps into joint lead”. It was a typographical error. The sports page heading was right.

The caption of the accompanying photograph in a cricket report “Brett Lee wins top honour [his first Allan Border Medal]” (North India, “Sport, February 27, 2008) was “Proud Moment: Matthew Hayden, Brett Lee and Lisa Sthalekar pose with their awards”, leading to queries on who Lisa Sthalekar is. The Sports Desk clarifies that the (AFP) report appeared in full and it had nothing about Sthalekar. (A flamboyant all-rounder, Lisa Carprini Sthalekar is a hard hitting batsman and bowls offspin. Born in India (Pune), she plays for New South Wales and scored her maiden Test hundred against England in 2003. In the Women’s International Cricketer of the Year race this year, Sthalekar collected her second consecutive title. She won by one vote last season and this year her margin was three, ahead of the second-placed Shelley Nitschke. Sthalekar made 558 runs at an average of 62.00 in her 14 ODIs during the voting period and she collected 12 wickets at 38.58. She also made 98 in Australia’s only Test match for the year, against England in Bowral this month.)
