Haryana jolts a complacent Delhi

GONE: Haryana’s Amit Mishra couldn’t read this one from Delhi’s Rajat Bhatia in the Ranji Trophy ODI match in New Delhi on Monday.

NEW DELHI: A complacent Delhi was jolted by a motivated Haryana by 26 runs in the North Zone one-day league at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Monday. This was Delhi’s first loss in four matches.

In other matches, Himachal Pradesh beat Jammu and Kashmir by 104 runs at the Harbaksh Singh Stadium while Punjab overcame Services by nine wickets at the Jamia Millia College ground.

Haryana took the field with a positive mind. As coach Vijay Yadav put it, “We have been improving with every match. The important thing is we played as a team. It has come because of the confidence the boys have shown this season.”

Delhi’s bowlers, with the exception of Amit Bhandari and N. S. Negi, were inconsistent. Bhandari, with 30 first-class wickets against his name, achieved the distinction of taking 150 wickets in one-day matches during this contest. Delhi’s batting also lacked character. Rajat Bhatia, Mithun Manhas and Suhail Sharma fell to indiscretion.

But credit to Haryana for a wonderful victory where Sunny Singh (59 off 68 balls with three fours and a six) and Kamal Beniwal (52 off 69 balls with two fours) supported the good work by opener Amardeep Sonkar (42 off 58 balls with six fours). Among the bowlers, leg-spinner Amit Mishra was outstanding as always, claiming three wickets and foxing the batsmen with his flight.

The scores: Haryana 258 for seven in 50 overs (Sunny Singh 59, Kamal Beniwal 52, Amardeep Sonkar 42) bt Delhi 232 for nine in 50 overs (Mithun Manhas 57, Chetnya Nanda 52 n.o.).

HP 212 for nine in 50 overs (Paras Dogra 77) bt J&K 108 in 33 overs (Vishal Bhatia six for 15).

Services 152 for nine in 50 overs (Soumik Chatterjee 45) lost to Punjab 153 for one in 33.2 overs (Karan Goel 79 n.o., Sunny Sohal 56).
