What they say
Indrani Rajadurai
Indrani Rajadurai, Southern Regional Director, HelpAge India:
Elderly people must be made aware of their rights and eligibilities, including concessions in travel and income tax. There is not much awareness about the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Bill . It is the duty of children and society at large to take care of senior citizens. About 30 per cent of the elderly in the city are financially secure, but leading a lonely life. We are holding a campaign to strengthen the joint family system. About 60 elderly self-help groups are functioning in the city and are involved in various income generation activities. We also organise awareness programmes on palliative care for aged people.
