Single line system

When I went to the railway station recently to book tickets, there was the newly introduced single line system in place for making reservation. The queue moved quickly. The new arrangement is appreciable one. It helps save time and also relaxing.

Embarrassing sight

It is embarrassing to see men urinate in the open space along the main road opposite to the bus stop in Market area unmindful of the passers-by and passengers, when the bus halts there for a few minutes. Needless to describe the discomfiture of women passengers in particular. It also poses a health hazard. It is unfortunate that the ‘Pay and Use Toilet,’ available nearby is not made use of.

Power cuts galore

This has reference to the news item in The Hindu dated February 28 quoting the Electricity Minister as saying that the State was managing the situation by resorting to one-hour load shedding in rural areas. In Dheeran Ma Nagar (Manikandam area), a suburb of Tiruchi city, we are facing systematic power cut for five hours daily: from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Belies claim

Time and again, the Electricity Minister has denied any power cut in the State, but has admitted to short periods of load shedding because of the difficult power situation. But what I experienced when I visited a village on Lalgudi-Anbil Road belies the Minister’s statement. Officially, power would be switched off for two hours in the morning and about an hour and a half in the evening. But in reality, the supply was cut off at irregular intervals both during day and night without any advance warning.

Lack of signboard

It is a regular sight on Williams Road (near Seva Sangam school), riders falling down from their two-wheelers, especially new users of the road. Most of the victims are women in the pillion and some with babies on their lap. It is all because of lack of a sign board and non-painting of the speed-breaker.

Vestibule buses

The vestibule bus system is helpful to commuters. There is no vestibule bus for route no. 26 to Mainguard Gate-Thuvakudi area. I request the transport authorities to provide vestibule buses either via Gandhi Market or Oyamari Road at the earliest.

Roadwidening work

Residents of West Chitra Street, Srirangam, are inconvenienced by the ongoing road widening work. Every other day, the water supply is disrupted and that is difficult for households solely dependent on piped water supply. The telephone connection has been disrupted for a week now with no sign of restoration in sight. To add to the woes, the road in front of the houses resembles a trench, making it difficult to go out. Attending to daily jobs such as bank, post office and shopping has become difficult. If aged people suddenly need medical attention, there is no way they can leave the house.

Purpose defeated

Mini bus service was introduced only to help rural people living in interior places not covered by regular bus service. But the very purpose is defeated when the bus crew adhere to the specified route, more on the breach, quoting bad road condition as the reason for deviation. When mini buses proceeding to Srirangam touch No.1 Tollgate, the crew simply off load the passengers, directing them to board other buses waiting there. It is also a fact that mini buses never maintain a timetable. Passengers are forced to wait indefinitely till the vehicle is fully loaded. It is earnestly hoped that the authorities concerned will take appropriate action and ensure effective service to the passengers.

Night service bus

At present, there is night service bus to OFT, HAPP and Police Colony from Chatram bus stand at 11.15 p.m. The same bus plies again from the bus stand at 1.15 p.m. As the bus covers three important areas, the response is overwhelming. It will be of great help to the public if the authorities concerned introduce a night service bus to Police Colony exclusively at different timings. Similarly, a separate night service bus is required to HAPP via OFT without touching Police Colony. One more night service bus via Tiruverumbur may also be introduced to HAPP via OFT at different timings other than the present airport route bus.

For uniform rule

The government has fixed age limit for tourist motor cabs. As road safety and environmental concerns are the reasons behind the framing of the rule, it should be applied to both government buses and other vehicles.
