‘CPI(M)-CPI row affecting projects’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said that the tiff between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) is affecting several development projects, including those in the housing sector.

In a statement here on Monday, Mr. Chandy pointed to the discriminatory treatment given to two housing projects separately implemented by the Housing Department, under a CPI Minister and the Local Administration Department, under a CPI(M) Minister.

The discrimination has come up at a time when the schism in the CPI(M) and the differences in the Left Democratic Front had led to a set back in the development process.

Mr. Chandy said that the ‘One Lakh Housing renovation scheme’ proposed by his government had been left in the lurch as the Finance Minister failed to make the necessary budgetary allocation for the scheme. The scheme was intended to renovate houses that had been distributed to the poorest of the poor under the “One Lakh Housing Scheme” implemented 30 years ago under the leadership of the then Chief Minister C. Achutha Menon and Housing Minister M. N. Govindan Nair.

The “One Lakh Housing Scheme” was a path breaker in the country. But at the end of 30 years, most of the houses under the scheme were in disrepair. The UDF government had formulated the renovation scheme envisaging an expenditure of Rs.40,000. Of this, the government proposed to give 50 per cent of the amount as grant and the rest to be met through voluntary contributions. He said that the LDF government had undone several pro-poor programmes.
