Security arrangements for Sivaratri

ALUVA: The vehicular traffic to the town, including water transports, would be regulated for the smooth conduct of the Maha Sivaratri Festival. Over one lakh devotees are expected to throng the Aluva Manalpuram to pay obeisance to their ancestors, said M. Padmanabhan, Superintendent of Police, Ernakulam Rural.

Addressing a press conference, the SP said parking of vehicles on roadside is banned from Bypass Junction to PWD SE Quarters, from Pulinchode Junction to Thottakkattukara and from Thottakkattukara to the Manalpuram. However, four-wheelers would be permitted to park on the roadside eastwards from the PWD SE Quarters to Perumbavoor (KSRTC) road.

Private vehicles would be allowed to enter the Manalpuram through Parur Junction and park on the space provided near the KSRTC temporary station.

The police said that the KSRTC buses operating services to the Manalpuram from Paravoor and Angamaly would proceed to the KSRTC temporary station at Desomkadavu, deviating from Parur Junction and would return along the same route.

The private buses from Angamaly and Kadungalloor (through UC College Junction) would end the service near Managalapuzha Seminary and return along the same route.

The private buses from Ernakulam side would turn right at the Pulinchode Junction and proceed through the Karothukuzhi Hospital Junction to Private Bus Stand. They would return along the parallel road and enter the National Highway at Navarathna Hotel to proceed towards Ernakulam.

The KSRTC buses from Ernakulam side would reach Karothukuzhi Junction along Pulinchode and the to bus stand through Government Hospital Junction. They would return along the same route.

The KSRTC buses from Perumbavoor side would deviate from Pump Junction, end service at Town Hall and return along the same route.

The private bus services from Perumbavoor and Kizhakkambalam sides would finish their services at the old private bus stand and return through Pump Junction.

The police also said that country boats, which for long had been a major means of transportation for the devotees across the Periyar to the Manalpuram during the festival days, would not be allowed this time.

Special Police would be deployed to restrict large number of people entering the temporary foot bridge at a time and barricades would be constructed on either side of the bridge to control movement of devotees well ahead of the bridge.

A strong contingent of police comprising 7 Dy.SPs, 29 CIs, 132 SIs, 124 policewomen constables and over 1,000 policemen would be deployed along the place, including plainclothesmen to identify the anti-social elements in the mob.

Circle Inspector K.G. Babukumar and Principal Sub-Inspector Murali were also present at the press conference.
