Unique venture: NSS students taking out a ‘Khadi Yatra’ in Chitradurga on Tuesday. Chitradurga: More than 80 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from various colleges in the State affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Medical Sciences are on a three-day mission in the district to promote khadi products and Gandhian values. On Tuesday, they held an awareness programme at Guru Bhavan where a weeklong exhibition of khadi products is under way. The students, clad in Khadi, also participated in a “Khadi Yatra” in the city. “We are promoting khadi products through rallies and programmes in educational institutions and among common people. We feel that khadi, which is considered to be an integral part of the Freedom Movement, should be made popular,” said Nitin, a student of physiotherapy from Bangalore. It was essential that the handloom industry is promoted mainly in rural areas. It would also provide people an alternative means of living, he said. Sahana Shankar of Hassan, a BAMS student, said that the khadi industry was growing and its products were in vogue. Khadi products were being exported to foreign countries, but Indians were reluctant to buy them, she said. “Many people in urban areas prefer to buy expensive foreign brands, but rarely thinks of purchasing Khadi dress material,” Ms. Shankarsaid. Ms. Shankar said that the students would stay in the city for three days, during which they would hold awareness programmes in villages too.
