Students collect samples of species on school campus

Energetic mission: Students of National Green Corps of Navalar Nedunchezhian Government Higher Secondary School on a tour to collect samples of various plant species.

PUDUCHERRY: To understand the importance of ecology, students of the National Green Corps (NGC) of Navalar Nedunchezhian Government Higher Secondary School, Lawspet, undertook a project to collect samples of various species on their campus recently.

The project on ‘Biodiversity Conservation’ was taken up as part of the National Environmental Awareness campaign. It was assisted by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India.

The objective of the project was to identify varieties of plants and animals, to name some types of species, and to learn to care for biodiversity at home and school.

It was also aimed at enabling the students to recognise the diversity of natural resources on the school campus.

In 20 days the students collected samples of 122 species. Later, the samples were taken to Pondicherry University for examination. Around 78 plant species belonging to 14 families were identified and the details including the family names, local names and method of identification were tabulated.

The school also came up with a report for the project. Through the project, the students were made aware of the availability of useful herbs and shrubs around them. They were also familiarised with the common plants and their ecological importance. The students understood the ecological importance of the trees around them.

The students were trained in the methodology of collecting plant species and morphological classification techniques to maintain the biodiversity register.

The school has been involved in the National Environmental Awareness Programmes on various themes for the last four years.
