Avoiding road work at rush hours
Road works in many parts of the city, for construction of drains and laying of pipelines, have been going on for a long time. While the completion of these works before the rainy season would indeed make for a change, the partial disruption in bus services in these areas has been causing immense hardships to the public.
Travelling along the Maruthankuzhi-Vattiyoorkavu road, for instance, was a nightmare till recently, when the road was tarred.
But now traffic has been disrupted for the past one month or more on this road on account of two drains being constructed across the road. Long traffic snarls have thus become a regular affair here, especially during the peak hours in the morning and evening.
In all major cities in the country, road works are taken up at night, when the worst of the traffic is over.
Here, road works commence at 8 a.m., right when the morning rush of commuters to offices and schools starts. Sundays and public holidays, when traffic is comparatively less, it is a holiday for the workers too.
