To ease traffic: The construction of a flyover progressing on the NH-7 at Kaveripattinam near Krishnagiri. — Krishnagiri: Relief from heavy traffic on busy National Highway–7 connecting Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri is very much on the cards with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) constructing a unidirectional flyover within Kaveripattinam. The flyover is being built to separate the traffic flowing into and out of Kaveripattinam and vehicle movement on Salem-Bangalore NH. The three-span flyover has been planned to cover a distance of 75 metres with the abatement commencing at Sandapuram near here. Though the total width of the flyover would be 12 metres, the road portion of it would be 7.5 metres on either sides with the remaining portion occupied by the median and reinforced earthen ramp walls. The flyover would be supported by as many as four circular pillars and the distance between the piers would be 20 metres each.
According to sources in the NHAI, work on installing the pillars had already commenced while the slabs to be laid over the pillars in the dimensions of 20 metres long and 7.5 metres wide were being cast in the casting yard. Funds for the construction of the flyover have been allotted from the Krishnagiri-Thoppur four-laning programme. The NHAI, which was taken up the work, is expecting to complete it before December 2008. The process of black topping has commenced at several points on the section. Uneven surfaces on both sides of the road had been levelled and fresh layers of black metal and tar were being laid at several places. Service roads to a distance of 35 km would be coming up on the stretch from Thoppur to Krishnagiri (94 to 156 km) taking into account the necessity of traffic. Six flyovers would also be coming up on the course of the four-lane highway in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. In addition, 15 underpasses and 29 bus bays would be set up on the stretch. A toll plaza would be built at (154 km) in Dharmapuri district. The project on completion would ease traffic congestion and reduce travelling time from Salem to Bangalore, say sources.
