West biased against Islam: Ridley

Staff Reporter

Strong views: British journalist Yvonne Ridley addressing a meeting in Malappuram on Tuesday

KOTTAKKAL: British journalist and anti-war activist Yvonne Ridley has said there is a calculated move in the West to portray Islam as a religion of terror and repression.

She was addressing a meeting organised by the Students Islamic Organisation here on Monday night.

Ms. Ridley said it was hardly 100 years since women in the West had got the rights that Islam gave women centuries ago.

Explaining the way she stealthily entered Afghanistan and her capture by the Taliban fighters, Ms. Ridley said it was her Afghan experience that helped her understand the real world of Islam.

She said Western mediapersons had turned hostile when she spoke about the gentle treatment she got from the Taliban fighters. The Koran speaks of equality between men and women, she said. K.K. Zuhra, State secretary of the Jamaat-e-Islami, inaugurated the meeting.
