Performance of markets reviewed

Vegetable inflow to be studied
|
VIRUDHUNAGAR: Government hostels would be instructed to buy vegetables from Uzhavar Santhai (farmers’ market), Collector V. Chandrasekaran has said.
Reviewing the performance of six farmers’ markets functioning in the district here on Tuesday, he said that hostels and noon meal centres would be asked to procure vegetables for their daily consumption from these markets after studying the inflow of vegetables.
Mr. Chandrasekaran instructed the officials to find out whether farmers had stopped bringing their produce to the markets and identify the reasons behind it. The officials were asked to provide all possible grants to farmers for buying seeds and other agricultural inputs to increase the area of vegetable cultivation in the district.
The farmers should be educated to cultivate vegetables that were the most sought after, he said.
Stating that the markets were being run with the dual aim of getting good price for farmers’ produce and availability of vegetables at cheaper rates for consumers, he wanted the officials to take efforts to operate State-run buses to the markets.
Mr. Chandrasekaran suggested that Aavin products and eggs should be sold in the markets.
