CUTTACK: Orissa-born NASA astrophysicist Subhanjoy Mohanty claims that earth-like planets does exist in the universe and scientists will be able to locate one such planet in near future. The 34-year-old Subhanjoy, a Nasa Spitzer fellow of Harvard University, said the scientists have now already discovered over 200 giant planets outside solar system and almost every week a new planet is being discovered. A native of the State and grandson of eminent litterateur Gopinath Mohanty, Mr. Subhanjoy was speaking to the students of Ravenshaw University here on Tuesday on the topic “Are We Alone? The Search For Planets Beyond Solar System.” He said with inventions of new technologies, the NASA scientists would be able to locate an exo-planet having signatures of life and chemical equilibrium one day. “Direct and indirect evidences have already been collected which show that there are planets which have features like our earth,” Mr. Subhanjoy, who has been associated with NASA for last five years, said. Passing the final school leaving examination from Loyola School in Jamshedpur, Mr. Subhanjoy went to US where he completed his post-doctoral degree in 2003. He fells that the instruments currently being used in NASA are not sensitive to smaller planets.
