Farmers seek adequate relief for rain-hit paddy

KARAIKAL: Farmers in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry requested the Central team that visited the rain-affected areas in the district on Sunday to give adequate compensation for the paddy crops affected by the heavy rains during the northeast monsoon in December last year in the district.

A six-member inter-Ministerial team from the Centre, headed by Bhamathi, Joint Secretary (Union Territory), Union Ministry of Home Affairs, for on the spot assessment of the situation in the wake of heavy rains and floods last year in the district interacted with the representatives of Karaikal district farmers association at Agalankanni village. The team members inspected the road that was damaged near Konnakaveli village and breaches occurred on the Noolar river on Tirunallar road and also the affected regulator at Agalankan village.

The five other members of the team were K. Manoharan, Director in charge, Directorate of Tobacco Development, Chennai, Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operation. Ms. Nalini Pathak, Assistant Director, Union Ministry of Finance , P.K. Jha, Consultant (Water Resources), Planning Commission, J. Jayachandran, Superintending Engineer, Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Chennai and K.K. Rajan, Director (Beach Erosion), Central Water Commission.

Earlier, N. Vasanthakumar, Collector, explained through a power point presentation about the damages caused to the agricultural crops, roads, etc by the heavy rains in the district. Official sources told The Hindu that the Central team visited several parts of Puducherry on Saturday before inspecting the rain-affected areas in the district on Sunday.
