Panchayat president murdered

Tiruvarur: Mangudi panchayat president Jayakumar of the Communist Party of India, was murdered, allegedly by a four-member gang, on the outskirts of the town on Tuesday.

According to the police, Jayakumar, who had launched a campaign against illicit liquor, received an anonymous call threatening him on Monday night. He set off in autorickshaw to lodge a complaint at the taluk police station. He was waylaid and hacked to death. CPI members condemned the killing and organised road rokos. Traffic was disrupted for more than three hours on Thanjavur -Tiruvarur main road. Several pilgrims on their way to Nagore and Velankanni were stranded.
