Oil spill leaves a trail of woes for motorists at Adyar

Slippery: The oil spill on Thiru-Vi-Ka Bridge in Adyar that resulted in several two-wheelers skidding on Monday.
CHENNAI: An oil spill for a considerable distance on the L.B.Road in Adyar late on Monday evening saw several two-wheelers skidding and the riders falling down.
Police attributed the spill to a Tamil Nadu Electricity Board truck transporting an old transformer.
Eye witnesses said that the lorry had started spilling oil from the J2 Police station in Adyar through to a stretch of Thiru Vi.Ka Bridge before the vehicle was stopped.
Some of the two-wheeler riders who escaped and others on the scene chased the vehicle and blocked it on the bridge. Some of them had also pelted stones at the lorry as a result of which its windshield was damaged.
Driver assaulted
According to police, the agitated group had also assaulted the driver who fled the scene after receiving a few blows. There were blood stains on one side of the truck just above the headlights.
When the police arrived the chaos had ceased, but some of the angry commuters, who had parked their bikes in front of the lorry, questioned the neglect on the part of the government and police to allow such a vehicle on the road. “It is a miracle that no one was seriously injured.
If we did not stop the lorry, the driver would have continued to leave a trail of oil and accidents on the road,” one angry two-wheeler driver said.
The police had to call for a sand truck and fill the trail of oil with sand. A police officer attached to Adyar (Traffic) L. Venkatesan said that the police did not know where the driver had gone and were looking for him. He said oil leaked from the transformer, which should have been drained before transporting.
