dated March 5, 1958: India’s example

Mr. Henry Cabot Lodge, United States permanent representative to the United Nations, after visits to Iran, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, told a press conference in New York on March 3 that India was “a show-piece which the world is watching to see what democratic methods there can accomplish.” He said that in India there appeared to be a real appreciation of the rights of the individual and the duty of the state to help him. A “unique situation” existed in India, where the population was second only to that of Communist China. “People in India and in Asia generally are watching to see whether the totalitarian system which reigns in China does more for the people than the democratic system of India which preserves civil rights. It is good to be able to report that India has plans for the development of its economy by democratic methods and not by the assumption that the end justifies the means.”
