Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article “Judicial activism, romanticism & overreach” (March 4). Judicial activism has been thrust upon the judiciary by the other two organs of the government. Vote bank-oriented policies of politicians and the indifferent attitude of bureaucrats, besides rampant corruption, have resulted in the common man depending overwhelmingly on the judiciary for the redress of his grievances. People approach the judiciary for the settlement of even trivial issues. Although corruption exists in the judiciary too, it is far less compared to the levels that exist in the legislature and the executive. But, when all is said, the people would like to see the three organs function within well defined boundaries. K.K. Cherian, Bangalore It is our insensitive politicians and bureaucrats who have compelled the judiciary to cross the demarcation. And through judicial activism, the High Courts and the Supreme Court have won the people’s faith. But in the long run, such activism will dilute the principle of separation of powers. When one organ of the government assumes more power without responsibility, it will lead to serious implications. G.D. Inian, Mayiladuthurai
