Tata Comm. to set up WiMAX network
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Tata Communications on Tuesday selected U.S.-based Telsima Corporation for providing WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) solutions for its broadband wireless network in India.
Tata Communications, formerly known as VSNL, will invest $500 million by 2010 for setting up the WiMAX network in the country to offer high-speed Internet.
The company’s Retail Business Unit President, Shankar Prasad, said they were in talks with investors to sell a minority stake in its retail unit.
In the initial phase, the WiMAX network of Tata Communications will offer broadband Internet access and content services to enterprise and residential customers in major cities.
“Telsima would provide WiMAX infrastructure and subscriber equipment solutions to deploy the commercial WiMAX network. It is setting up 3,000 base stations, which will enable customers to access video, education, music and business services,” he added.
