Water situation continues to be affected in Delhi

Sheila may seek PM’s intervention for solving problem

‘Haryana refuses to stick to the water sharing agreement’

NEW DELHI: With no relief in sight, Delhi is preparing to write to the Union Water Resources Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office to issue directions to Haryana for releasing the city’s full share of water from the Yamuna.

Water production at the Wazirabad and Chandrawal water treatment plants continues to be affected in view of Haryana’s refusal to release the quantity of water that Delhi is entitled to.

Sources in the Delhi Government said the Chief Minister was contemplating writing to the Prime Minister, bringing to his attention Haryana’s refusal to stick to the water sharing agreement.

“Haryana has always been arm-twisting Delhi. But the instances of water disruptions have increased in the recent past under the stewardship of the current irrigation department officials. The matter has already been brought to the attention of the Upper Yamuna River Board, the Central Water Commission and the Chief Secretary of Haryana, but with no results so far. The Delhi Government is now thinking of taking the matter to the Prime Minister,” said sources.

The Delhi Jal Board which has also written to the Haryana Irrigation Department, CWC, UYRB and the Haryana Government is also resting its hopes on the Central Government. A Jal Board official said: “We want the Government to ensure that Haryana becomes more accountable. There are times when they release surplus water and we have no option but to let it flow. There has to be some regulation on the use of the Yamuna waters and Haryana should be made to comply.”

Provisions

The water situation in the Capital’s Central and Northern parts continued to remain affected and the Delhi Jal Board and the NDMC have had to make provisions for supplying water tankers in the affected areas.
