Top entertainers: Pop singer Sharon Prabhakar (left) and Bharatanatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai at the Malabar Mahotsavam in Kozhikode on Sunday. Kozhikode: Malavika Sarukkai’s lithe Bharatanatyam steps, the mesmerising voice of P. Jayachandran and the sheer energy of pop queen Sharon Prabhakar made the 12th Malabar Mahotsavam, which came to a close on Sunday night, a memorable affair. Top notch artistes graced the Mahotsavam on the Kozhikode beach. The festival may have been cut short to three days, but the presence of these artistes was befitting the stature of the Mahotsavam, which has become the biggest festival of arts in Malabar region. The mediocre fare dished out at last year’s festival was a cause for concern for many. That not many people turned up to watch Malavika perform was unfortunate. Those who witnessed the show are unlikely to forget her rendition of ‘Mareecha Vadham’ any time soon. The music shows on the beach did not lack big crowds though. The show led by Jayachandran had a pleasant mix of melodies and faster numbers, catering to varied tastes. Quite clearly it was the youth that Sharon targeted. She rendered “Jawani jaaneman…” , “Dhoom machale…” and “Aaj ki raat…” with gusto. Ujjaini’s innovative rendition of “Kajra mohabbatwala…” (‘Kismet’) was impressive too.
