A beginning

The return of Kashmir Singh, death row prisoner who spent 35 agonising years in Pakistan’s Kot Lakhpat jail, to India is significant. Besides providing relief to his family, it provides an opportunity for the two countries to think of releasing prisoners languishing in each other’s jails for decades. They can, at least, spend the rest of their lives peacefully with their families.

The pardoning by President Pervez Musharraf of the 67-year-old Kashmir Singh has rekindled the hopes of innumerable families in India whose kin are languishing in Pakistani jails, especially those taken prisoners during the 1965 and 1971 wars. Gen. Musharraf’s gesture is a significant move towards improving the fractured diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Though Kashmir Singh and his wife Paramjit Kaur cannot relive their lost years, it is comforting to know that they will spend their old age together. I hope the Indian government will expedite the release of the hundreds of Kashmir Singhs languishing in Pakistani jails and alleviate the sufferings of their wives and mothers. This can be one of the best confidence-building measures between the two nations.

Anirudh Govind Rajan,

Chennai
