Congratulations

Hearty congratulations to Team India on winning the Commonwealth Bank ODI tri-series in Australia. Skipper M.S. Dhoni led remarkably from the front and turned the team of inexperienced youngsters (who, many including me, thought were not the right choice) into a world class team. It was heartening to see the Indian batting line-up fighting consistently all the way to the end. For a change, it was the Australian team that ended up eating humble pie, its plan of raking up controversy after controversy to affect the concentration of the visiting team blowing up in its face.

The young brigade has done the country proud by humbling the mighty Aussies in their own backyard. While Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar are the real finds on the bowling front, Rohit Sharma has proved to be a revelation in batting. The youngsters have proved that they are equal to the task and reciprocated the faith of the selectors.

The Brisbane victory will be remembered as the turning point signalling the decline of the Aussie monopoly over the world of cricket. Despite the media attention on the younger players, we should not forget the contribution of the older players. Without Sachin Tendulkar’s controlled innings in both the finals, we would not have achieved the victory. Instead of drawing a sharp line between the young and the old, the team and its fans must encourage an assimilation of experience and youth.

Congratulations to Dhoni and his men on winning the CB ODI tri-series. The victory against Australia was indeed memorable. In both the finals, Sachin displayed his experience with the bat. The others did their job commendably to clinch the exciting win.

Indians were constantly distracted by the Aussies both on and off the field. By ignoring the provocations and remaining focussed on cricket, they emerged as the deserving winners. For the young team, the victory will serve as a major morale booster.

Dhoni displayed tremendous maturity in tight situations and marshalled his resources well. By scoring an unbeaten century and 91 in the two finals, Tendulkar again proved his critics, who maintained that he has never won matches for India, wrong. The historic win at Brisbane will be long remembered by Indians.

‘We came, we saw, we conquered’ was the motto of our young Indian team. They conquered not only the CB Trophy but also the hearts of Indians across the globe. Three cheers to the team.

India owes its emphatic win over Australia to the hard work put in by the boys under Dhoni’s leadership. Australia’s defeat exposed the cracks in its batting, especially the middle order.

Congratulations to Team India on shattering the myth of Australian invincibility in its own backyard. Dhoni’s Devils played well throughout the series. Everyone contributed to the well deserved win.

Hats off to Dhoni and his young team for vanquishing the world champions! They have proved that Aussies are not invincible. Another milestone is the under-19 World Cup victory. With Indian cricket progressing by leaps and bounds, the day is not far off when Indians will emerge as world champions.

It was heartening to see the men in blue deal the knockout punch to the mighty Aussies. The series victory for Dhoni’s Devils was very convincing.

It was a gala finale for every Indian. Defeating a team like Australia is a Herculean task. The selectors too deserve a word of praise.

The victory of the young brigade in the second final against the cricket superpower is symbolic in more ways than one. It was a triumph of the spirit of the game against overwhelming odds. By winning the tri-series, our boys proved that they cannot be bullied into meek submission. It is Dhoni who is the man of the series. The firm foundation for the victory was laid by Anil Kumble who exhibited immense tolerance and maturity under the most provocative situation in the Test series.

This refers to the report that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh intervened during a debate in the Rajya Sabha to congratulate the Indian team. By winning the tri-series, the team has restored our prestige in the international community. Cricket is far more important than many other issues and ought to be celebrated in Parliament. Why not give the cricket team a belated Bharat Ratna? From the media frenzy and politicians’ response to the tri-series win, it appears that the players deserve it. No one will oppose the choice.

Mohd. Afzal,

Faridabad
