U.P. ban on student union polls goes
Special Correspondent
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday lifted the ban on student union elections.
The decision follows the nod given by a committee headed by Chief Secretary P.K. Mishra, which was asked to give its opinion on union elections in the light of the recommendations of the J.M. Lyngdoh Committee, set up by the Centre to curb ragging.
Making the announcement in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said the elections would be held in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
Referring to the ban imposed by her government on September 2 last, she attributed it to campus lawlessness, which vitiated the academic atmosphere.
Ms. Mayawati said that since the ban was imposed, the academic atmosphere had improved.
